think that the install routines will also have copied the 64bit versions of the accompanying programs, like shell tools etc. So if you manually change to the 32bit kernel, there won't be many drivers etc. which still work. Afaik, most of the OS is on the CD's in two versions, for 32 and 64 bit...

confuse dual-/multicore CPUs with 64-bit ones. One doesn't automatically imply the other. I think nearly any dual core CPU's currently sold are 64 bit. On the other side there certainly are single core 64 bit CPU's -- both from Intel and AMD. In any case, 64 bit CPU's will readily work with a 32 bit OS.
